According to a post on Disney’s Media and Entertainment Blog, with the addition of the Expanded Aspect Ratio, Disney+ subscribers will get to enjoy a 1:90:1 ratio which offers up to 26 percent more picture for certain sequences. This translates to more action being displayed for a more immersive experience. The 13 films that will support the IMAX format include Iron Man, both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Captain America: Civil War, and Black Widow. Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings will also be available in the Expanded Aspect Ratio when it premieres on Disney+ on November 12. Disney does state the availability of its content varies by region, so not every single subscriber will be able to watch these movies in the IMAX format. However, the post neglects to say which regions won’t have the content. The collaboration with IMAX doesn’t stop there, as Disney promises to continue working with the format to bring a higher quality standard to its streaming platform. Disney said that it plans on adding DTS surround sound to Disney+ but didn’t provide a timeline for when subscribers can expect its implementation. The new format launch comes as Disney+ celebrates its second anniversary with new content releases. It is also the first major streaming service to offer IMAX. It’s unknown at this time whether the Expanded Aspect Ratio will migrate over to other films. Many of these Marvel movies were shot with IMAX cameras, but some were only partially filmed in that format.
