The mobile carrier announced a new plan category known as Carrier Crusher plans on Thursday. The lowest cost annual plan provides customers with 12 months of unlimited talk and text and 1 GB of high-speed data at the cost of just $100 a year. The most expensive annual plans are $20 per month (or $240 per year). That plan includes unlimited talk and text and 15 GB of data. Some plans are only billed monthly, such as a $25 per month plan with unlimited talk and text plus 5 GB of high-speed data, or a $15 plan with unlimited talk and text, plus 2GB of high-speed data. Boost Mobile said it would announce even more of these Carrier Crusher plans throughout the upcoming holiday season. However, it’s important to note that these are only available to new Boost Mobile customers for now. The Carrier Crusher plans target Americans who want an unlimited data plan but don’t end up using most of their available monthly data. Boost Mobile pointed to a 2019 study by Reach Mobile, which showed that one in three Americans with an unlimited data plan use less than 5GB a month, and that 90% of consumers overpay for these plans. “The US market is set up for the carriers to provide a high price point to all Americans today. It’s great for the 15% of users who consume over 10 GB of data per month, but for the rest of us, we are subsidizing the bill for those users,” Stephen Stokols, the head of Boost Mobile, said in the announcement. For comparison, Boost Mobile’s cheapest $100 a year plan provides the same amount of data per month as about 12 hours of internet browsing, 200 streamed songs, and two hours of watching a video in standard definition.
